Health screenings, informative handouts, fun, fellowship, food and prizes were on hand for area seniors at the 2010 Health Fair held at the Wendell Mitchell Conference Center at the LBW campus in Greenville.

Sponsored by the South Central Alabama Development Commission Area Agency on Aging in conjunction with the City of Greenville, the event drew a large number of visitors, giving them the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked, register for discount drug plans, learn about home health care services and much more.

There was also time for fun.

Several ladies present brought creatively decorated hats, which they paraded around the room, each sharing the story behind her chapeau.

Winner was Greenville Senior Center manager Cathy Brown with her tall, shiny creation worthy of a Las Vegas showgirl, crafted from a recycled 100th birthday table topper. Second place honors went to Benny Payne and her red hat covered with buttons showing off her support for causes close to her heart, such as the American Cancer Society, while Lois Martin won honorable mention for her garden hat (“It was plain and drab, so I added some colorful flowers. Now when I wear it while I am gardening, people always wave at me!”).

More winners showed up in the crowd when tickets were drawn and a number of door prizes donated by local health care organizations and businesses were given away.

Following the program, participants got to enjoy a boxed lunch.
