Members of the Greenville Lions Club lived the charge they received from Helen Keller decades ago by serving as “knights of the blind” last week.
The Lions participated in the Alabama Lions Sight Conservation Association’s Child Vision screening on Friday, visiting more than 200 fifth graders in three schools across the county. Assisted by Lion Alton Abrams of Dothan, local Lions Letha Watford, Ricky Cargile, MacDonald Russell, Ricky Crysell, N’Neil Carr, Katie Holcomb, Colin MacGuire and Herbert Morton screened the far vision of 224 students in McKenzie School, R.L. Austin of Georgiana and Greenville Middle School.
“We found 47 of the students, or approximately 20 percent of the children screened, needed eye exams and/or glasses for distance vision,” Morton said.
“Now we as a club will be working with the school nurses to help those who need assistance in getting full vision exams and obtaining proper eyeglasses
