The American Cancer Society has a number of advocacy events planned over the next several months at the Alabama State House and ACS community representative Jessica Garrard wants to invite the community to participate in these events and become involved in the fight against cancer.
“Our goal is not just raising funds for research and assisting those battling cancer, though we have done those things very successfully,” Garrard said.
“We also want to be advocates in our communities, our states and nation for policies and legislation that help make our nation healthier and to raise awareness of the continued battle against cancer and the strides being made in research and treatment.”
On January 27, 2009, a press conference on Smoke-Free Alabama is set for the State House from 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
On February 25, 2009, it is ACS Legislative Day at the State House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Plans include a press conference to introduce legislative agenda, Cancer Survivor Recognition, volunteers’ orientation, and meetings with legislators.
The biggest of the events, Garrard said, is the March 25 Relay Rally and Smoke-Free Campaign, set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We would love for all our area Relayers be a part of this and have a really huge crowd at the State House that day,” Garrard said.
Gov. Riley is set to make a proclamation that day concerning Colorectal Cancer Month. A Relay around the State House and other special activities are planned along with a press conference and additional volunteers’ orientation.
On April 23, 2009, Minority Cancer Awareness Day is set from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the State House.
Plans for the day include passing a joint resolution congratulating the Deep South Network for 10 years of community service successes, a press conference, volunteers’ orientation and meetings with legislators.
If you are interesting in participating in any of these events, please contact Jessica Garrard by Thursday, January 15, in order to be registered (Office: 334-335-2164; Fax: 334-335-2194 or Cell: 334-674-0541 or by email at Jessica.firstname.lastname@example.org).
The Annual Butler County Relay For Life is set for 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. May 8-9 at the YMCA football field.
