William Pollard Brown

Funeral services for Mr. William Pollard Brown were held Dec. 11 at North Highland Baptist Church. Rev. Robert L. Jones officiated. Military burial followed in Ward Wilson Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan, Ala.  Hudson Funeral Services directed.

Brown was the second child of six children born to Edward and Ella Winston Brown. His youthful days were spent in Tuscumbia, Ala., where he joined the St. Paul Baptist Church, and graduated from the Trenholm High School.

Later Sgt. William Pollard Brown served his country in the U.S. Army  from 1943-1946.

He pursued further a higher-education at the Alabama State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in math and science

Mr. Brown began his teaching career as an educator in Chambers County.

Professor Brown moved to Dothan in 1954 and taught in the Dothan City School System at Carver High School and Beverlye Middle School.

In his gentle demeanor, he revived his spiritual life and joined the North Highland Baptist Church and shortly thereafter, in 1961, he married the late Mrs. Percy Peterson King-Brown.

Continuing his educational life, he kept up his community activities as a supporter at his church. He also coached youth baseball at the then      Lincoln Community Center.  His students affectionately gave him the title of “Daddy Brown.”

He retired from teaching in 1982, but remained active in the community with the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, Cancer Society, AERA-Houston County Retired Teachers Association (Honorary Member), NAACP, ADC Alabama State University Alumnus, Charter member of the Carver High School Grand Reunion, and President of the Men’s Civic Club.

Predeceasing him were: parents, two sisters, Callie Brown-Warren and Clara Brown-Hudson; a brother, Edward G. Brown; two brothers-in-law, Ozell Jones, Ernest Warren; wife, Percy Peterson King-Brown; and a sister-in-law, Rosa Peterson.

Surviving him are: his Fiancé, Edna McLoyd of 23 years; a brother, John O. Brown (Loretta); a sister-in-law, Hullette Brown; two brothers-in-law, Eugene Hudson and Williams Peterson; a niece, Kaye Charsheer Jones; a sister Delois Jones; a nephew, John O. Brown, II (Lisa and their sons); a caring, loving, and devoted step-son-in-law and stepdaughter, Willie and Helen Awis; a favorite step-grandson, William Joel Awls (Kimberly) and their four children.
