Hundreds of residents gathered at Lomax-Hannon College in Greenville on Thursday, June 19, for a vibrant Juneteenth celebration. Organized by local resident Tammie Rice, the festive event went off without a hitch despite a rainy afternoon that failed to dampen community spirit.
“I really wanted to educate the community and make them aware of the history of Juneteenth and just give the community a chance to come together,” Rice said. “I think it turned out really well. With the amount of people participating and just the really positive feedback, it was a definite success.”
The celebration featured live entertainment, voter registration outreach, food vendors and activities for children. Among the highlights was a parade led by the Temple of Hope Drumline under the direction of Lamar Harper, with a performance which set the tone for a day of cultural celebration and civic engagement.
Abbie Jackson, representing the Butler County Civic League, emphasized the importance of community involvement beyond celebration.
“Voter turnout in the past few elections has been so weak,” Jackson said. “We are aware that there are persons who are eligible to vote but for one reason or another have not registered and some who are registered are not taking advantage of their right to vote.
“So, we are here today to say to those who are not registered to vote that we will take the time today to assist you with voter registration or give you the information about how you can register on your own because it is critical.”
Local author Jahne’ Mitchell attended the event to promote her new book, “Zion’s Amazing Encounter with the Great King,” and vendors like Ramona Jackson with her sweets and baked goods, Lollie Lu’s Fresh Lemonade and the Sons of God kept the crowd fed and refreshed.
Seraaj Family Homes, a local therapeutic foster care center, provided a large tent and multiple bounce houses, giving families a place to gather, play and enjoy the day out of the rain. Gloria Johnson of Sav-a-Child Outreach Center served as the event emcee.
Rice expressed her appreciation for everyone who helped make the celebration a success.
“I want to thank everyone for the great turnout and the support,” she said. “Every single person that showed up did their part in making this event a success and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
