Children with disabilities took to the field this week for the inaugural game of the Butler County Adaptive Soccer League, a joyful milestone for inclusive sports in the region. The event was sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and began with a short devotion before players were divided into teams for a friendly scrimmage.

“It came out of a conversation I had with Bethany Raulerson,” said Laci Slagley, coordinator of Fort Dale FCA and one of the league’s founders. “My kids play parks and rec soccer and she mentioned that she wished that there was some kind of adaptive style game for her children.”

Raulerson, a mother of three special needs children, had long hoped for an inclusive sports option locally. “The city didn’t have any adaptive sports or any plans for any… at least anytime soon,” Raulerson said. “I wanted something for my kids to do now.”

The Red Team featured Jace Gray, Carson Wilson, Paul Raulerson and Winnie Raulerson, coached by Teovanni Zachinni. The Blue Team included Mason Anderson, Katy Raulerson, Trey Coppage, Kason Gray and Khalil Wilson, coached by Tavio Zachinni. Cade and Miles Raulerson served as referees.

The Red Team won with a decisive lead, thanks to multiple goals from Paul and Winnie Raulerson and Carson Wilson. The Blue Team, however, demonstrated determination and teamwork with a goal from Khalil Wilson and an assist from Katy Raulerson.

Trey Coppage was recognized for his patient coaching, and Mason Anderson stood out for his consistency with throw-ins.

“I think it went phenomenally,” Slagley said. “Everyone, myself included, had a blast. It was a very laid back atmosphere where we could let the kids shine and play while being adaptive to whatever their needs are.”

Raulerson added, “I wanted something that was available for all disabilities, physical, mental, emotional… just to give them something to do. To boost their self-esteem.” She said her children have been asking every day since the game, “Is it soccer day yet?”

The event wrapped up with a dance party to Forrest Frank’s “Your Way’s Better” and popsicles for all.

Laura Simmons, FCA co-coordinator, emphasized the spirit of the league.

“The first annual adaptive soccer huddle has been a true joy for all involved so far. I can’t think of anything better to bring a community together than getting involved, supporting and celebrating each other with all of our individual uniqueness.”

The league continues throughout June. Parents or guardians interested in signing up their children can contact Laci Slagley at (205) 999-3995.
