Panthers finish third, take medals at championship meet
The Georgiana School track team competed in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Track Championship on May 2. Individual student athletes displayed their winning skills, placing among the top in several categories and earning the team third place overall in the competition.
“We are pleased to announce that our Georgiana Panthers have secured a third place finish in the State 1A boys track team competition, said Panthers’ track coach Jennifer Majors in a Monday media release. “This is the best any Georgiana Track Team has done in the history of Georgiana High School.”
Majors said special teams and individual runners came away with state titles.
“In addition to the third place overall achievement, the boys achieved individual medals and state championships as well,” she said. “Our seniors who participated in the track meet, boys and girls, all finished in the top 10 of the state in their respective events. This has not been achieved by any track team at Georgiana.
Panthers individual and team achievements are:
- Nasir Cheatham won a state championship (gold medal) in the high jump and third (bronze) in the long jump;
- Jalen Crenshaw won the state championship (gold) in the 100-meter dash and second place (silver) in the 200-meter dash;
- Quantavious Scott placed second (silver) in the high jump;
- Lillie Boggan placed ninth in the state in the discus throw; and
- The boys’ 4×100-meter relay team — Quantavious Scott, Kaveon Miles, Nasir Cheatham and Jalen Crenshaw with Jacobie Scott as the alternate — won a state championship.
“We couldn’t be prouder of these athletes and all of their hard work over the years to achieve the highest of goals in track and field,” Majors said.
Butler County Schools Secretary to Superintendent Joe Eiland, Tina Powell, expressed the school system’s pride in the Panthers.
“Congratulations to the Track Team and Coach Majors,” Powell said in a Monday media release.
