Greenville High School celebrated a milestone moment on May 5, as six senior student-athletes officially signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the college level.
“Seeing this special group of athletes sign letters of intent to go to a college to continue their athletic careers,” said Athletic Director Garrick Pimienta. “For me as a coach… this is the end game. We want to see our athletes go to the next level, see them compete at a college or university of their choice and continue their athletic careers so that they can get degrees and diplomas from those schools. I’m very proud to see these young men and this young lady sign these letters.”
The student-athletes honored at the ceremony included: Javen Similton, heading to Orange Coast Community College; Ty Phillips, committing to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas; DeMarion Mallory and Bruce Albritton, both signing with Ventura Community College; SyNya Edwards, who will attend Coastal Alabama Community College North in Monroeville and Krishun Combs, bound for Wisconsin Lutheran College.
The event was an emotional and proud moment for families in attendance. Dorothy Bailey, grandmother of Javen Similton, shared mixed feelings as her grandson prepares to move across the country to California.
“He’s never really been away from home by himself so I’m sad but I’m also so very proud of him,” Bailey said. “He’s a good kid and he’s going to do good things.”
Veronica Edwards, mother of SyNya Edwards, reflected on her daughter’s journey through athletics. “It’s been a long, hard 12 years,” Veronica said. “She’s kept me on my toes and on the road here, there and everywhere playing sports. As long as she keeps God first, everything else will fall in line.”
Greenville High’s ceremony spotlighted not only the talent but also the determination and support behind these athletes’ accomplishments. For the school and its community, it was a celebration of perseverance, opportunity and the bright future that lies ahead.
