The 28th annual Butler County Achiever Award will soon recognize one male and one female student-athlete, chosen from among thirty-one outstanding candidates. Sponsored by the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, the prestigious award honors high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics, church involvement and community service.
“It’s truly an honor to be selected as a nominee,” said Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce Director Tracy Salter. “Being selected as an Achiever Award nominee means being recognized for your dedication, perseverance and all-around excellence as a high school student-athlete, church and community ambassador.”
Each winner will receive a $3,500 scholarship, funded by contributions from local businesses, organizations and individuals. Nominees were selected by the administration of Butler County’s four senior high schools — Fort Dale Academy, Georgiana School, McKenzie School and Greenville High School — with coaches, guidance counselors and principals or headmasters playing key roles in the nomination process. Schools could nominate up to 12 students each.
A panel of out-of-town judges evaluates candidates based on academic and athletic achievement, extracurricular activities, church and community involvement and personal honors. Following a review of applications and in-person interviews with nominees and their parents, the recipients will be selected.
The award ceremony, recognizing all nominees and the two recipients, will be held May 2, at the Wendell Mitchell Conference Center on the LBW Community College campus in Greenville.
Eric Folmar, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Fort Dale Academy, praised the caliber of this year’s nominees.
“We have a legacy of producing not only great athletes but exceptional young men and women that really contribute to society,” Folmar said. “We have some wonderful students nominated this year that we’re incredibly proud of and we’re looking forward to them being recognized at this year’s banquet.”
