American Legion Post 24 is teaming up with the Cornwallis 1828 Historical Homestead to host a fish fry honoring local veterans on May 17.

“This is just one way we can give back and bring everyone together,” said Post 24 Commander Lee Tanner. “Any veteran in the area is welcome — whether they live here or are just visiting — no matter the branch. They’re also welcome to bring a guest, whether it’s a spouse, child, grandchild or friend. We’ll fish in the morning, enjoy a nice lunch together, hold a flag retirement ceremony and then head back out to the water to finish out the day.”

In preparation for the event, members of Post 24 will visit the homestead ahead of time to catch the fish that will be served during the fry. The rest of the meal is being generously provided by Cornwallis 1828.

“Lee is doing a great job down there,” said Demp Bell, owner of the Cornwallis homestead. “Some of the Post 24 members volunteered at the Doe Rodeo last year and this is our way of giving back. We also hope this helps the post connect with more veterans in the area who may not be familiar with their work.”

Bell added that all fishing activities will follow state regulations and licensing requirements.

The event will be held at Cornwallis, located at 17204 Hwy 21 in Braggs and is open to all veterans and one guest, free of charge. However, attendees must register in advance through the Cornwallis 1828 Facebook page.
