William Michael “Mike” Hughes, from Fort Deposit, and a resident of Montgomery, departed for his Heavenly Home on April 16. He left peacefully with his children at his side.
Mike was born and raised in Fort Deposit and attended Lowndes County High School, Young Harris College and The University of Alabama, where he collectively earned a degree in history. He later served his country and fellow citizens in The Alabama Army National Guard.
He was a Christian above all else and loved to talk about Jesus Christ, his salvation and the promise of eternal life. Mike enjoyed several regular activities with his children, including feeding and watching birds, trips to dog parks, family game nights, Alabama Crimson Tide football games – especially the many, many Alabama national championship games he witnessed – and a weekly family Bible study.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, William L and Isabel Coleman Hughes, paternal grandparents William L Hughes, Sr, and maternal grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Henry Neal Coleman, Sr.
He is survived by his son, Michael Hughes, of Lapine, his daughter, Catherine Hughes, of Montgomery; a sister, Margaret Hughes (Mark) Hamm of Cullman; niece, Sarah Hamm (John) Higginbotham, of Cullman, niece and Ellen Hamm (Chris) Hamby, of Helena, many great nieces and his children’s mother and his friend, Becki Williams Tindal of Highland Home.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at Myrtlewood Cemetery in Fort Deposit on Saturday, April 26 at 2 in the afternoon. All are invited and encouraged to attend. Jeremy Coleman will preside, with services provided by Dunklin Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will include Mark Hamm, William Davis, Alex Tindal, Max Conway, Robert King, Michael Hora and David Evjen.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Fort Deposit Methodist Church or Baptist Hospice.
