The vibrant spirit of Mrs. Roper will once again descend upon Commerce Street on Saturday, May 3, as women dressed in colorful caftans, red wigs and chunky beaded necklaces gather for the second annual Mrs. Roper’s Caftan Crawl.

Inspired by the iconic character Helen Roper from the 1970s sitcom “Three’s Company,” these gatherings, also known as Caftan Crawls or Mrs. Roper Romps, have become a nationwide phenomenon celebrating fun and fellowship while often raising funds for various causes.

“It was so much fun last year. We just giggled and laughed the whole time,” said event organizer Danan Whiddon. “We weren’t really sure how it would turn out, but a lot more people showed up than we were expecting. Then people started reaching out and asking me to do another one.”

Whiddon encourages attendees to “grab a moo moo and meet us downtown.”

Participants will gather at Sweet Heart Alabama on Commerce Street at 10 a.m. before parading through the area, stopping at several local businesses. The costumed group will visit shops and boutiques, with local merchants in conjunction with First Saturday special promotions during the event. Many attendees are expected to embrace the retro style of Helen Roper, known for her bold fashion choices and free-spirited personality, making for a lively and colorful spectacle.

The first Mrs. Roper’s Caftan Crawl in Greenville attracted a surprising number of participants who made stops at local businesses including the Alabama Grill, True South Outfitters, Not the Norm Boutique and Coffee Cup Quilters.

Liza Berrey, who attended last year’s event, fondly recalled the lighthearted atmosphere and camaraderie among participants.

“I had a great time,” Berrey said. “Everyone had their caftans, wigs, and big jewelry. We did some shopping, went all the way down to the quilt shop, stopped at the fire department… We all just talked and laughed and cut up.”

With enthusiasm high and caftans at the ready, organizers are hopeful for an even larger turnout this year. The Mrs. Roper’s Caftan Crawl offers a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to connect, support local businesses and celebrate the quirky charm of a beloved television character.
