In a mid-day webinar with local Emergency Management Agency (EMA) directors, the National Weather Service (NWS) out of Mobile/Pensacola upgraded the forecast for the next few days. The latest update, issued around 11:30 a.m., predicts multiple rounds of severe storms bringing wind and hail Thursday afternoon, with the potential for tornadoes Friday and the main event occurring on Saturday.
Threats for Saturday include strong tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour (MPH) and quarter-sized hail.
On Thursday, March 13, isolated strong to severe storms are possible across parts of southwest and southcentral Alabama into northwest Florida. Friday night, areas west of U.S. Interstate Highway 65 will begin, with the best potential for severe storms north of Highway 84 in southwest Alabama.
Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats Friday, but tornadoes are possible.
“We do not expect a lot of storms overnight, but anything that develops will have the potential to quickly become severe,” NWS representatives said. “If a lot of storms develop, this could contaminate the environment leading into Saturday.”
Weather service personnel expressed growing concern about the potential for strong tornadoes Saturday. Conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day, with isolating supercells developing throughout the morning and afternoon ahead of a squall line predicted to swing across the area toward the east. Strong tornadoes, strong winds and large hail are all possible.
Meteorologists are watching the system. Updates are expected as the storm system enters the area.
