The National Weather Service in Mobile briefed Alabama Emergency Management Agency (EMA) directors Monday morning, announcing an enhanced risk of severe weather for Tuesday evening.
The main threat includes damaging straight-line winds up to 60 miles per hour (MPH) and the possibility for tornadoes. Flood potential is limited with less than 1.5 inches of rain anticipated.
Butler County residents can expect severe weather to enter the area between 6 and 8 p.m. and to end by 3 a.m. Wednesday.
A line of thunderstorms will move quickly through the area with a low potential for isolated thunderstorms developing ahead of the storm system. NWS personnel are watching energy at the storm’s surface but anticipate that a high, warm layer or air will suppress tornado potential. A worst-case scenario, where the warm air layer is not present would allow for both damaging wind gusts and tornado threat to increase.
A wind advisory is in effect from noon through midnight Tuesday. Thunderstorms can escalate quickly and the NWS urges citizens to be prepared by setting up access to weather warnings, getting inside a sturdy building during severe weather alerts, staying away from windows or getting inside a vehicle if a building is not nearby.
