Alvin Briggs announced Black history program speaker

Alvin Briggs, a former head football coach at Greenville High School and retired executive Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) will be the guest speaker during the annual Black History Program at Butler Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church located at 401 Oglesby Street in Greenville. The program will start at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb 23. 

This year’s theme is, “Sports: It’s More Than a Game.” Briggs was a former standout high school student-athlete at Greenville High School and an outstanding defensive back at Auburn University when Auburn won two SEC Championships. 

He played professional football in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. He was the first African American to serve as executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSSA).

Briggs earned both a bachelor and master’s degree in education from Auburn University. He and his wife Roxie have two children, Champ and Kandiss. 

“We are excited to have Coach Briggs as our guest speaker,” said Lanetta Rudolph, program coordinator. “He is an outstanding Christian, dedicated family man, exceptional administrator and can connect with our young men and women. This event is open to the public and everyone is invited.”
