Utility providers are reporting that severe weather overnight has caused statewide power outages.
Around 3:30 am, more than half of Pioneer Electric members were without power.
“As soon as it’s safe, crews will be dispatched to assess our system and make repairs,” the cooperative shared on social media. “This extensive damage is similar to what we see after a hurricane.”
Sunday morning, Alabama Power alerted customers that storm crews were staged and ready Saturday evening with an additional 1,200 outside storm resources added to the storm response team.
At 6:00 a.m., 38,400 Alabama Power customers were without power in central Alabama and 129,000 were without power statewide as a result of overnight severe weather.
“While damage assessments are ongoing, early reports indicate a number of broken/fallen trees resulting in downed wire,” said Alabama Power representative Michael Jordan in a media release. “Crews are actively working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible.”
Around 4 a.m., 3,327 Butler County residents were without power. By 10 a.m., the website findenergy.com showed that number was down to 1,150 Butler County customers without power. The breakdown by energy provider was:
- Pioneer Electric – 973; and
- Alabama Power – 177.
The National Weather Service in Mobile reported the storm threat ended around 5 a.m.
