The Butler County School System (BCSS) released a notice regarding school of choice and transferring, providing parents with information regarding their options on school transfers.
The school system is required to notify families about the options because of Greenville High School (GHS) designation as a Priority School. The designation comes from the school’s recent accountability report card grade of 57 (F).
“Understanding how GHS earned the Priority School status requires consideration of factors that influence each of these measurements,” said Rheta McClain, the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services at the Butler County School System. “Parental involvement, student attendance, student accountability for academic achievement, school culture, climate, staff engagement, and community support play significant roles in GHS’s performance.”
Multiple factors impact a school’s ranking — 11th-grade students’ performance on the ACT, which makes up about 45% of the report card grade); math and ELA (English language arts) proficiency in 11th graders, ACT score improvement, chronic absenteeism, graduation rate and college career readiness based on the graduating class of 2023.
“However, GHS school leaders, the ALSDE [Alabama State Department of Education] staff assigned to support GHS, and BCSS district staff are optimistic about the school’s progress,” McClain said. “The staff and students of GHS have taken ownership of their current status and have thoroughly analyzed each data measurement.”
Regarding student transfers, parents have the following options available to them for the 2025-2026 school year:
* Option 1: students can remain or enroll in their currently assigned school;
* Option 2: students may transfer to Georgiana School if the school has available space and is willing to accept the student;
* Option 3: If option two becomes unavailable because Georgiana School reaches maximum capacity, option 3 is that students may transfer to a comparable school in another school system that is not included in the annual list of Alabama Accountability Act Schools if the school has space and is willing to accept the student; and
* Option 4: The student may transfer to a qualifying non-public school in Alabama that is willing to accept the student.
Parents who wish to complete the transfer process must fill out a Student Transfer Form and submit it to Superintendent Joseph Eiland before the deadline of March 1.
The Student Transfer Form can be found online at the Butler County School District’s website, or by contacting GHS at (334) 382-2608 or the Butler County Board of Education Central Office at (334) 382- 2665, Ext. 1100.
