Gov. Kay Ivey announced Thursday, Feb. 6, the appointment of former Butler County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy David Scruggs as Sheriff.

Scruggs was recommended by recently retired Sheriff Danny Bond and stepped into the role of interim Sheriff after Bond’s last day, Jan. 31. Bond said he had expected Ivey’s decision on Jan. 31 by noon but learned Friday afternoon that Ivey expected to deliver her decision within the next two weeks.

The new Sheriff comes into the office with 18 years of law enforcement experience and has served as Chief deputy for three years. He will serve out the remainder of Bond’s elected term which runs through 2026. At that time, he can choose whether to run for reelection.
