Leadership at Greenville Middle School has introduced a “Wellness Squad” aimed at creating a supportive and nurturing environment for staff members. As part of their efforts, the squad holds a “healthy workplace contest” each month, encouraging teamwork and fostering a sense of community among faculty.

“Well-structured team building and competition in the workplace can be considered therapeutic and relaxing and is a great stress reliever,” said Wellness Squad member Jacquie Hamilton.

This month’s contest, titled “Pretty Cool Pumpkin,” featured a Halloween-themed pumpkin decorating competition. Teachers and staff creatively decorated pumpkins, which were then judged on stage by community members.

Rose Cheeseboro claimed first place with her “Mathematician Beetlejuice” pumpkin, while Katherine Hale’s hot air balloon globe-themed pumpkin secured second place. Third prize went to the school’s certified nutritional planners, who presented a pumpkin titled “The Lunch Lady.”

“What a great way to celebrate community within Greenville Middle School with a little healthy competition,” said retired teacher Kimberlei Ruggles. “Building relationships and supporting the school’s vision by showing students how to be a community is so important to school climate.”

Michele Thigpen, Mental Health Services Coordinator for Butler County School System, emphasized the importance of wellness in schools. “When teachers are healthy and supported, they can be more effective educators, fostering a positive classroom atmosphere. Similarly, students who feel emotionally and physically well are better able to focus, engage and thrive in their studies,” Thigpen said.

The Wellness Squad’s initiatives, like the pumpkin contest, are part of the school’s broader effort to enhance well-being and promote a positive environment for both staff and students.
