Faye Watson Phelps Powell, 84, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Sept. 25. She was born on June 30, 1940, in Greenville. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1958 and married Wendell Powell the following year on May 2. Together they built a successful farm, including crops and cattle, which she loved. In 1967, they built Powell’s Grocery and Service Station. For eleven years, she served the community and developed lifelong friendships with her customers.
She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and choir member over the years.
Faye cared for her family and friends with a loving heart. She was a woman of faith, leading by example.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Claude Phelps and Minnie Lerline Dean Phelps, and her brother, Claude Edward Phelps. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Albert Wendell Powell and four daughters, Susan (Walter) Nolan, Tina (Mark) Colvin, Wendy Branning and Amy (Jeremy) Doss. She also leaves to cherish her memory, seven grandchildren, Thomas (Meredith) Nolan, Bethany (Zachary) Fenimore, Nicholas (Hollan) Colvin, Mitchell Colvin, Sommer (Stephen) Hindman and Joyner and Tucker Doss and five great-grandchildren, Bayne and Mary Watson Nolan, Harper Fenimore and Sterling and Emmett Hindman. She is survived by her only sister, Edna Phelps Lee, and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with Brother Danny Dean officiating and Johnson Funeral Home directing. Burial followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Pallbearers were Thomas Nolan, Nicholas Colvin, Mitchell Colvin, Joyner Doss, Lynn Powell and Lance Powell.
Flowers were accepted, but donations may be made to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association in care of Lynn Powell.
