This week’s Greenville Advocate Hero of the Week is Travis Dearden, owner of TK’s Paint and Body and a volunteer firefighter. Nominated by his daughter, Andrea Mitchell, Dearden’s dedication to his family and community is what earned him the title.
“He’s the best father I could have asked for,” Mitchell said. “He was always very active in our lives and he was always there.”
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Dearden spent much of his early years traveling with family due to his father’s construction job. Eventually, his father established body shops in Mobile and Greenville and moved the family to Butler County.
“I love my little town. I’m not going anywhere,” Dearden said, reflecting on his decision to stay in Greenville and build a life there.
Now a father of three and grandfather to four, Dearden makes family a priority, ensuring that his schedule allows him to be present for every event.
“That’s why I opened my own business, so I can make my own schedule. Every event that [my family] has or whatever is going on, I’m able to be there and spend as much time with them as I can,” he said.
Mitchell, who also volunteers as a firefighter, credits her father for inspiring her path. She said they now have the opportunity to work together at the fire station.
“He goes above and beyond for everyone, and he does a lot for the family,” Mitchell said. “He lets my daughter play in the fire truck, and any free moment he has, he’ll walk over and get her just to spend time with her.”
Dearden’s influence on those he loves goes beyond firefighting. His family remains close-knit, with all his children and grandchildren living within a mile of him.
“Family is the most important thing,” Dearden said, adding that they try to gather at least once a week to stay connected.
Mitchell emphasized her father’s unwavering support, saying, “I’ve always been able to turn to him with any problem, and he’s always willing to listen and offer advice.”
