A Greenville resident, Benjamin Kyle Mosley, 30, was apprehended on June 5 after leading officers on a vehicle chase and foot pursuit on June 5.

Mosley, a black male, was charged with attempted murder, possession of marijuana in the first degree, reckless driving, attempting to elude law enforcement, criminal mischief in the third degree, resisting arrest, and multiple violations after leading officers with the Greenville Police Department (GPD) and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department in a chase around 3 p.m.

“An officer with the Greenville Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle for improper lane use, improper passing, and reckless driving on Fort Dale Road near Manningham Road,” said Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn in a statement issued to The Greenville Advocate.

According to Lovvorn, the vehicle pulled over initially before attempting to flee as the officer approached the driver. The officer then pursued the suspect as he drove downtown and was joined in the chase by several units with GPD and the sheriff’s department.

“The suspect continued to flee from officers until he lost control and wrecked his vehicle in the area of Butler Circle and Overlook Road,” Lovvorn said. 

Citizens reported witnessing the chase which passed directly in front of W.O. Parmer Elementary School. According to Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond, the school went on lockdown during the chase to ensure the safety of children and parents waiting to pick them up.

“We are thankful nobody was injured because they certainly could have been,” Bond said. “The potential was certainly there.”

The suspect fled into a wooded area on foot, Lovvorn explained, and officers quickly apprehended him after a short foot chase.

“I would like to commend all law enforcement involved in this highly dangerous pursuit,” Lovvorn said. “They did an excellent job of coordinating efforts to help limit the risk to the public and apprehend a violent felon.”

Bond noted the both agencies often work together to ensure the safety of Greenville residents.

“When it comes down to the nitty gritty, we’re all in this together,” Bond said. “And, we all pull together to get the job done. Whenever they put the call out my folks fell in with it to help apprehend this gentleman.”
