The Butler County School System held its annual spelling bee competition on Thursday, a tradition dating back at least 50 years according to Joseph Eiland, the Butler County School superintendent.

After winning the competition in their own schools, the participants come to Greenville to compete. Spelling bee winners at each of the county schools travel to Greenville to participate against one another for the title of district champion.

“This year’s winner was Andi Hernaez from McKenzie School,” said Ashley Nall, technology specialist with the Butler County School System.

Third place went to Trevion Walker from Greenville Elementary School.

And fourth place was awarded to Courtnie Davis from Georgiana School.

The alternatives for this year’s competition were Ella Ruth Coghlan, Victor Marshall, Jayden McMeans and Tyreck Howard.

The sponsors for this event were: Laura Shell from McKenzie School; Jessica Morgan from Georgiana School; Tonya Coker from Greenville Elementary School; and Shawnda Bell from Greenville Middle School.

All the winners posed for pictures with Eiland.

Butler County is proud of all the participants in this year’s event.

“County winners travel to Birmingham on March 19 for the state competition,” Eiland said.
