Following Walmart’s recent unveiling of plans to spend $69 million in Alabama stores this year, the Greenville Supercenter celebrated its completed remodel with a visit from local Chamber of Commerce members and a presentation of a $2,500 check to Greenville-Butler County Library by FMGI, Inc., on behalf of the Greenville Walmart last Friday morning. The remodel included several department transformations and expansion of new innovations that will help customers save time.

“We are excited to offer our customers an upgraded shopping experience with the recent store updates,” Greenville Store Manager David Luckett said. “Our shoppers can enjoy an added level of convenience by ordering ahead and picking up at our newly installed Pickup Tower or by visiting our combined hardware, automotive and sporting goods counter.”

The improvements are part of Walmart’s plan to spend an estimated $69 million this year in Alabama through the remodeling of 14 stores and continued expansion of innovations, like Pickup Towers and Grocery Pickup that help save the customers’ time and money.

  • State-of-the-art electronics department with interactive displays that allow customers to test out electronics in person before purchasing
  • Modernized grocery layout, including new deli counter, hot case and pre-cut meat case
  • Installation of new lighting in the restrooms
  • New signage, lighting and flooring throughout the entire store for better line of sight and easier navigation
  • Fresh paint on the inside and outside of the store
  • Expanded Money Center that includes updated counters and additional televisions

Pickup Towers

Walmart Pickup Towers are 16-foot, high-tech vending machines capable of fulfilling an online order in less than a minute once the customer arrives at the store. It’s easy to do: once the order is ready, step up to the Pickup Tower and scan the barcode sent to your smartphone to retrieve your item. This year, Walmart plans to add 16 Pickup Towers to stores across Alabama, including the Willow Lane location in Greenville, which is now up and running.

In addition to Pickup Towers and store remodels, Walmart will continue to innovate to help customers save time and money by creating a seamless shopping experience that gives them the options to shop when, where and how they want. The following are examples of the customer-focused innovations that will be expanded this year in Alabama.

  • Grocery Pickup — Busy customers love Walmart’s grocery pickup option. It gives them the convenience of shopping online and the ease of quickly picking up groceries without having to leave their cars. The best part: it’s all at no additional cost. Walmart plans to expand the popular program to 27 stores across Alabama by the end of the year. The Schillinger Road location in Mobile currently offers this service.
  • Grocery Delivery — Walmart’s convenient grocery delivery service is also proving to be a hit with customers. This year, Walmart plans to add the service to 22 stores in Alabama, increasing its coverage area in the state. The Schillinger Road location in Mobile currently offers this service.
  • FAST Unloader — Today, product is unloaded as it arrives at the store through a complex, highly manual process that has seen little innovation over the last 50 years — until now. A new system in Walmart backrooms — known as FAST — automatically scans and sorts items that come off trucks based on priority and department, allowing associates to spend less time unloading in the backroom and more time on the sales floor with customers. This year, Walmart plans to expand the technology to 27 stores across the state.
  • Autonomous Floor Scrubber — The autonomous floor scrubber uses assisted autonomy technology to perform the task of cleaning and scrubbing the concrete floors in stores. The company plans to expand the technology to 43 stores across Alabama this year.
