A theft and pursuit Monday that took Greenville Police Department officers into neighboring Lowndes County ended with two Montgomery women behind bars.

Greenville Police Chief Justin Lovvorn said police got a call around 11:15 a.m. from Walmart that employees had observed a shoplifting incident. Police were given a description of the suspects and the get-away vehicle, which was spotted shortly after the duo left the store.

“Officers observed the vehicle turning off Cahaba Road onto Fort Dale Road,” Lovvorn said. “As they attempted to stop it, they driver got on the interstate.”

Lovvorn said GPD officers pursued the suspects into Lowndes County on Interstate 65.

“They got up to the 142-mile marker where a Fort Deposit officer was stationed,” Lovvorn said. “He was in front of the vehicle and they pulled over. Through the traffic stop, officers found marijuana and other items in the vehicle. They arrested the two people in the vehicle.”

Police arrested Tommyracle Brown, 20, of Montgomery and charged her with shoplifting, theft fourth-degree, attempting to elude a police officer and possession on marijuana second and Elaine Bailey, 53, who was charged by Greenville PD with possession of drug paraphernalia and was wanted on theft warrants from Elmore County and the City of Wetumpka.

“We recovered all of the stolen property,” Lovvorn said. “They had taken clothing, shoes, random assorted merchandise and even a big plastic tote that they put everything in. I think what they were planning to do was go online and sell the items.”

Brown and Bailey were taken to the Butler County Correctional Facility and booked on the charges. Lovvorn said the entire process went smoothly thanks to GPD officers and the assistance of the Fort Deposit Police Department.

“They were able to get them stopped safely and recover all of the stolen property,” Lovvorn concluded. “It was good work by the patrol officers and the Fort Deposit Police Department.”
