A patron who tried to break up an armed robbery of the Dollar General in Georgiana last Thursday night is recovering from his injuries in a Montgomery Hospital.

Georgiana Police Chief Carlton Cook said police were notified of the shooting just before 9 p.m.

Cook said two black males entered the store, located at 119 AL-106, and demanded money from the clerk when the shooting occurred.

“The first to enter the business was wearing all black — a black shirt, black pants and a grey hoodie,” Cook said. “He was about 5-foot, 5-inches, and it is unknown whether he is an adult or juvenile. He had on black tennis shoes with a white bottom. He entered the store and demanded money.”

As the first subject was demanding money, Cook said a second suspect entered the store.

“The second suspect was about 6-feet tall and wearing camo and black and white tennis shoes,” Cook said. “They each had guns. One was a silver handgun and the other gun was black. From what we were advised, they made contact with the clerk.”

Cook said at that point, a customer tried to intervene.

“A white male customer was checking out during the robbery and tried to intervene,” Cook said. “The suspect fired one round that struck him in the abdomen and exited through his back. He was transported to Baptist Hospital and was in stable condition after surgery.”

Cook said the suspects took an unknown amount of cash from the registers and also grabbed a blue bag with approximately $900 inside. Cook said Georgiana Police Department investigators and local law enforcement agencies are looking for the suspects.

“They fled out the front door and went to the left on foot,” he said. “There were no witnesses, so we don’t’ know what type of vehicle they were in, if any.”

The robbery at the Dollar General is not the only such crime to take place in the region. The Dollar General in Highland Home was robbed approximately two weeks ago. Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office investigators said the robbery took place around 9:52 p.m. at the store. Three individuals entered the store disguised in masks and brandishing handguns and stole over $3,000 in cash.

No injuries were reported. The case remains under investigation.
