A precinct in District 2 is moving to a new location before the next election cycle.

The Butler County Commission approved moving the voting precinct that was in the old Greenville Police Department to American Legion Post No. 24 last week.

The Commission had previously discussed the relocation and negotiated with members of the Post for use of the building on election days.

“We’re going from the old police department to the fairgrounds,” Commission Chairman Joey Peavy said. “We have talked with the Post Commander and they will pay all of the upkeep on the building.”

Commissioner Frank Hickman explained the reasoning behind the move.

“For the benefit of the public, the move is required because the city no longer owns it,” he said. “I think the Board of Education owns it. There were issues with air conditioning and other things necessary to voters and it became apparent that we needed to get a new location. It was an act of necessity.”

The lease will be $1,000 per year.

“The building they were in is not going to be available and we’ve had to move this precinct,” District 2 Commissioner Jesse F. McWilliams said. “They (Legion) have been very receptive to it and it will be a great place to vote. It’s air conditioned and has restroom facilities.”

In other action last Tuesday, the Commission:

• Voted to reappoint Cleve Poole to the Board of Equalization.
• Tabled a proposal to approve Avenu Insights & Analytics LLC  for sales tax collection in order to study the proposal and weigh it against the state’s services.
• Approved Delta Computer Systems renewal for software support with and increase of $1,380 per year for the Probate Office for a total$26,760 per year and an increase of $1,320 per year for software support for the Revenue/Reappraisal Office for a total of $25,740. Commissioners expressed concerns that the cost of the system was increasing each year.
• Discussed setting parameters on use of funds from the new fuel tax in for a five-year plan with County Engineer Dennis McCall.
• Approved a resolution to seek bids for materials and supplies for the county road department.

During the afternoon the Butler County Commission also heard from county departments with budget requests for the FY 2019-20 budget. Probate Judge Steve Norman, Deborah Crews from the Revenue Office and Reappraisal Office, Sheriff Danny Bond, Stephen Loftin from the Butler County Correctional Facility, EMA Director Kris Ware, Diane Kilpatrick from the Commission Office and Engineer Dennis McCall addressed the commission.
