A controlled burn on Faulk Road in Honoraville turned dangerous on Tuesday when, according to Honoraville Volunteer Fire Department chief Robert McGough, wind caused the fire to “jump the plow line” and become a wild fire.

The Honoraville VFD was dispatched at 1:52 p.m. on Tuesday to contain the blaze and were joined by the Luverne, Highland Home and Luverne Fire Departments and the Alabama Forestry Commission.

A nearby residence and the Salem Church of Christ were both near enough to be potentially endangered by the fire.

McGough said the firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the woods and safely put it out by 4:30 p.m.

McGough said the ongoing drought certainly factored in to how quickly the blaze became dangerous and said citizens should be careful when burning in these weather conditions.

“The first thing is, always check with the Alabama Forestry Commission to make sure a “no-burn” order isn’t issued and to get a permit. I would also say to contact your local fire department if they have any questions about the burning,” McGough explained.
