The Annual Georgiana Youth Fishing Day is set for Saturday with plenty for attendees to do.

The event has been occurring for several years and takes place at a pond located at 190 N. Jane Ave. in Georgiana from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., according to Georgiana Police Chief Carlton Cook. The event is a partnership between the Georgiana PD, 21st Century Program, Walmart, Virtuous Women, Georgiana School, Georgiana Volunteer Fire Department, Greenville Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Butler County Commissioners, Alabama Power, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Douglas Harris, Alie Crenshaw, the Andalusia Army Recruiting Office, National Guard and Greenville High School ROTC.

“We collaborate, “ Cook said. “This event is about building a positive relationship with the community. The Army National Guard and Recruiting Office will have several games for kids and of course, we’ll have fishing.”

Among the fish in the lake are bluegill and bass and Cook urges people to attend with their children.

“Families can come out and enjoy a wonderful day of fellowship, food, fun and fishing,” he said. “It’s about fathers and sons, daddies and daughters, moms and kids. We want to see families have fun.  We’re so thankful Douglas Harris donates his pond for this.”

Helicopters and law enforcement vehicles will be on hand along with the military displays.

“It’s to inspire kids,” Cook concluded. “We want them to see there are different fields they can go into and have a better quality of life.”
