City and county officials met Friday afternoon for a briefing from the National Weather Service about the potential for severe storms this weekend.

During a conference call at the Butler County Emergency Management Agency, NWS Mobile forecasters told officials throughout southern Alabama that the possibility of strong storms hitting the region is increasing, however, Butler County remains on the edge of an area listed as “marginal” for severe storm possibility. Wilcox County is in the “marginal” area with most of Butler County being in the “slight” risk area.

The National Weather Service said many people have had concerns about the history of Palm Sunday tornadoes in Alabama.

“We don’t want to alarm anybody,” an NWS spokesperson said. “We just urge caution.”

Weather Service officials said the biggest times of concern will begin Saturday night and continue into the morning hours Sunday. The heaviest storms could push into the area between 6 a.m. and noon Sunday. Weather Service officials say the storms will likely move east and be out of the area by noon Sunday.

The risks involved with the storms include, high winds, hail and tornadoes. Flooding is not likely from the system.

Area officials will meet with Butler County EMA Director Kris Ware Saturday afternoon to discuss any changes in the forecast.
