Monday morning, Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon will sign and issue a proclamation calling for bells to be tolled in Greenville at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, in remembrance of those that served and paid the ultimate sacrifice in World War I.

The city’s proclamation, which will be signed during a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday, coincides with a call by the United States World War I Centennial Commission for all Americans to participate in a national tolling of bells, as well as a statewide proclamation signed by Gov. Kay Ivey in July 2018, called Bells of Peace: A World War One Remembrance.

Bells of Peace is a collaborative program, whereby American citizens and organizations, across the entire country, are invited to toll bells in their communities 21 times at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. McLendon, along with the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, is encouraging churches and other organizations to toll their bells as part of the program.

McLendon invites those interested to join his office Monday morning as he issues a proclamation on behalf of the City of Greenville recognizing November 2018 as the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the fighting in World War I.

The City of Greenville does not have access to bells, however, you are encouraged to contact local churches and organizations for their participation to toll the bells.
