A man was shot by a Brantley Police officer after attempting to flee early Wednesday morning.

According to a statement by Heath Carpenter of the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), officers were “requested by a business owner to investigate a suspicious vehicle in 9600 block of South Main Street” in Brantley.

Officers arrived at the scene and found two men sleeping in the vehicle “with a firearm visible on the console between them.”

“The men were awakened by police and fled, leading officers on a short vehicle pursuit.  Initial reports are that the vehicle was driven directly toward an officer who was on foot, and that officer fired his weapon into the windshield, striking one occupant.  A male subject was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were reportedly sustained by law enforcement gunfire, and are not believed to be life-threatening.”

In a step that is noted as “standard procedure”, Brantley Police Chief Titus Averett has requested the SBI to perform an investigation into the shooting. According to the statement, the SBI is currently performing the investigation and will provide a report to Crenshaw County District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer when it is completed.
