Tropical storm Alberto dropped several inches of rain in just a few hours Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Alberto made landfall Monday morning and pushed into Alabama by midday. The center of the storm passed closely by Greenville at about 9 p.m. Monday night.

Power outages throughout Butler County were only sporadic, according to Butler County Emergency Management Director Kris Ware.

She said Alberto’s effects were not as bad as predicted last week.

“The power outages reported were mainly due to strong winds causing limbs to fall on power lines,” she said. “We did not have a report of any widespread outages. Considering what the models showed early last week, I’d say we did pretty good.”

Some of the models predicted Greenville receiving over eight inches of rain over the weekend. According to Ware, the highest reported total was from Fort Deposit at 4.3 inches. She added that Butler County was in Alberto’s heaviest rain bands.

“We recorded 3.7 inches at our office located in downtown Greenville,” she said. “Georgiana Police Chief Carlton Cook reported 4 inches in Georgiana.”

As of yesterday (Tuesday) morning, Ware said Bowden Bridge on County Road 62 was temporarily closed due to flooding.

“The road department is out cleaning up fallen limbs and accessing more roads,” she said. “As they continue to access, we will decide if more roads need to be closed.”
