Merle Jernigan Calloway

Merle Jernigan Calloway, 95, of Montgomery, formerly of Greenville, died on Dec. 2, 2017 after a brief illness. Born in Brewton, Alabama, she was the second child of William Yancey Jernigan, Jr. and Nettie Goff Jernigan. She graduated from Alabama Women’s College (University of Montevallo) and worked for the Alabama Department of Pensions and Security (DHR) before becoming a homemaker. She has a special talent for needle work and created many beautiful items, which she delighted in giving away.

She is survived by her daughter Laura Ann Calloway (Terry W. Harris) of Montgomery, sisters Marguerite Jernigan Northcutt of Brewton and Betty Clair Jernigan of Greenville, her sister-in-law Joyce Jernigan of Brewton, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, James Richard Calloway, and her brothers William Yancey Jernigan, III, Richard Goff Jernigan, Gordon Earle Jernigan and Kenneth Floyd Jernigan, and her nephew William Yancey Jernigan, IV.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Montgomery or the charity of one’s choice. The family would especially like to thank Hilda Gardner, Lillian Hullett and Julia Dudley for the care and loving attention they showed to her in during her final days.
