Sasanqua helps beautify city year-round

With Greenville’s Sasanqua Garden Club wrapping up its annual holiday greenery fundraiser, there’s no better time than now to share some of the many beautification projects these ladies have undertaken in the Camellia City throughout the years.

Whether it’s historic downtown Greenville, the “hilltop” or out on the by-pass, the results of their efforts visibly brighten and enhance the community, says the club’s public relations chair Linda Daughtry.

“The greenery sales are our big fundraiser each year, and I think it’s good for those who support us to know just where the monies go. This year it’s the new downtown planters in front of the post office,” Daughtry explains.

Among the other Sasanqua beautification projects, one of the most eye catching is the big “Welcome to Greenville” sign that greets visitors.  The seasonal plantings surrounding the sign, including tulips every spring, add natural color and beauty to the landscape—and they are also provided courtesy of Sasanqua, says Daughtry.

Additionally, the over-sized glazed pots located at Studio Ritz (the former Main Street building), in front of City Hall and other spots downtown were provided by the garden club.

Other past projects in downtown Greenville undertaken by the ladies of Sasanqua include the ornamental park benches in front of City Hall and the historic marker located downtown in Confederate Park.

Brilliantly colored “knock out” roses provided by Sasanqua can be found at the interstate ramps as well as on the hill top at the base of the city’s water tower. And that seasonal staple of the south, crepe myrtles, bloom and brighten both the city’s airport and the grounds of the Greenville YMCA every year.

Sasanqua Garden Club members take pride in making the Camellia City look its best throughout the year, says Daughtry.

“We love our town, and we love being able to make it even more beautiful for everyone, resident and visitor alike, to enjoy.”
