A desire to bring the county’s youth together to promote animal welfare and a fast approaching contest deadline were the concerns expressed by the Butler County Humane Society’s Kimberly Matthews at last week’s Butler County Board of Education meeting.

“Our goal is to start a new organization, a junior humane society, in our county for ages 12-18. We are looking for mature kids who can deal well with animals,” said Matthews, the vice president of the BCHS.

The goal is to have Junior Humane Society members attend monthly meetings, to be held at BCHS president Kandys Killough’s Second Chance Rescue site on Wite Road near Greenville, as well as to contribute at least four hours of community service—two with the humane society and two elsewhere–each month.

“We have a number of events throughout the year they can volunteer for; by participating in community service they are helping put themselves in the running for our proposed college scholarship program,” said Matthews.

She said she would be putting together more information about the new junior organization for the school system in the coming days.

In addition, Matthews reminded those in attendance about the BCHS’s ongoing t-shirt art contest.

“We really want our school kids to design cute and colorful designs for our new t-shirt–and time is running out,” said Matthews, the organization’s vice president.

The t-shirt design contest is open to all Butler County residents ages 6-18. The first place winner will get a free t-shirt featuring their design, $25 in cash from sponsor The Greenville Advocate and $20 in art supplies donated by a BCHS member. Second place winner will receive a free t-shirt and $15 in art supplies while the third place winner will get to take home a gift basket of pet goodies.

The deadline for contest entries is next Wednesday, November 1 with submissions to be dropped off at the offices of The Greenville Advocate.

“We really want your cute and colorful designs for our shirt,” said Matthews.
