Jeanette Gibson Walton, devoted Southern lady and dedicated educator who began her teaching career at Walter O Parmer Elementary School in Greenville, has passed away at the age of 92. Jeanette Gibson Walton was the wife of the late Guy “Chief” Walton, Jr. who was the principal of Greenville High for many years. Mrs. Walton received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Troy State Teachers College, master’s degree from Auburn University, and advanced certifications from Florida State University and University of South Florida. From Greenville, the Walton family moved to Fort Myers, Florida where Mrs. Walton was a teacher and became one of Lee County’s first guidance counselors for an elementary school.

While teaching in Greenville, Mrs. Walton was invited and joined Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Society for Key Women Educators. After moving to Florida, she continued being an active member of this organization. She became a state (Florida) officer and represented Florida at numerous conventions around the United States. Not only did she enjoy the conventions but she and her family enjoyed traveling whether in Hawaii or touring Europe. She and Mr. Walton especially enjoyed the opportunities to travel in Europe with their grandchildren.

Jeanette was the daughter of the late Ashley and Ruby Perdue Gibson of Crenshaw County Alabama. Being the descendant of one of the early pioneer families of the area, she loved genealogy and learning about her heritage. On numerous occasions, she received special appreciation for her service to the Ft. Myers Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, where her husband was an executive officer.

Mrs. Walton is survived by two daughters: Linda Walton Reynolds (Longwood FL) and Jean Walton DiMuzio (Punta Gorda FL), five grandchildren; Evie Thoner, Murphy Reynolds, Carrie Madden, Jason Reynolds, and Melanie Bigelow and ten great grandchildren. A memorial service was held in Florida and a farewell service will be held at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home in Greenville at 1pm on Monday, October 16, 2017. Friends and family members are invited.
