A band of rain turned into flash floods in the southern part of Crenshaw County last night, with some areas receiving more than five inches of rain according to Crenshaw County Emergency Management Agency director Elliott Jones.

“The creeks in our area couldn’t handle that type of downpour,” Jones said. “The five inches of rain happened in two hours.”

A part U.S. Highway 331 near mile marker 49 was closed due to the flooding of Dry Creek Campground, but was opened for public use again at midnight.

“There was one house on 331 that was definitely flooded,” Jones said. “We had to do a swift water rescue by boat for the family.”

Approximately four other houses also flooded during the night’s showers.

Mount Ida Road between Springhill Rd and U.S.331 has been closed, along with North King St. in Glenwood.

South Glenwood Rd, between Brantley and Glenwood, has also been closed due to flooding.
