KMC Foundation hosts second back to school bash

With the end of school’s summer vacations looming near, the Kendrick-McGhee charitable foundation topped off a busy summer by kicking things into gear with a Back to School Bash on Sunday evening. The event was held at Luverne Elementary School. The festival was ideal for families, specifically school children, to help entertain and encourage students in preparation for the upcoming school year.
A plethora of attractions such as games like musical chairs and Simon says, prizes for game winners, and music from DJ Dre Dawson attracted locals to the extravaganza, but the purpose of the event made it even more beneficial to the students.
“This year we wanted to center the bash around goals,” one of the event’s coordinators, Payton McGhee said. “So, all of the kids had time to have fun and evaluate what they expect out of the next five months to a year in school.”
This year’s Back to School Bash served and entertained more than 57 students, and reached out much farther than to just Luverne families, hosting students from Troy, Geneva, Montgomery, and as far out as Atlanta.
“[The bash is] definitely open to everyone,” McGhee said. “We pride ourselves on being from here and working here, but more so on having no restrictions on fellowship.”
The Back to School Bash was followed by the Alumni Football Game at Luverne High School. Both events were sponsored by the Kendrick McGhee Charitable (KMC) Foundation. The KMC Foundation was founded in 2014 by Wendy and Payton McGhee, with community-oriented goals in an effort to enhance youth through education, exploration and service.
All money raised by the Back to School Bash and the Alumni Football game is raised for the KMC Foundation’s annual scholarship fund.
“Once secure, we look to pour our money raised into our exploration fund,” McGhee said, “allowing us to provide mentorships and field trips to local supporters.”
