Advocate wins 34 awards at 2017 APA Better Newspaper Contest

The Greenville Advocate has been named one of Alabama’s best small weekly newspapers.

The Advocate took top honors in the Alabama Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, winning second place in General Excellence and Advertising Sweepstakes for Division D.

Seventy-four newspapers submitted 2,753 entries in this year’s contest, which was judged by the Georgia Press Association.

The awards were presented Saturday night at the APA’s 146th annual summer convention, held at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Ala.

“We strive to produce publications that appeal to all of our readers, advertising partners and community,” publisher Tracy Salter said. “I am proud of the staff of The Greenville Advocate for being recognized with a total of 34 awards for advertising and editorial excellence by the Alabama Press Association.  A lot of hard work and dedication goes into producing award-winning publications and it’s an honor to be named one of Alabama’s best small weekly newspaper by a panel of our peers.”

 

The Advocate won a total of 34 awards.

 

The first-place award included:

  • Best feature photo for “Ride to Recovery” by Jonathan Bryant

* Best pubic service for “Move Over Law” by Andy Brown

  • Best single ad over ½ page (color) for “City of Greenville” by April Gregory
  • Best glossy regularly scheduled special section for “Profile Magazine by staff
  • Best one-time special section for “Butler County Career Academy” by April Gregory
  • Best innovative online advertising ad for “First Realty” by April Gregory
  • Best magazine periodical for “Camellia Magazine” by staff

*Best regularly scheduled special section glossy for “Letters to Home” by staff

  • Best sports news in-depth coverage for “The Big Hit” by Jonathan Bryant
  • Best headline for “Fast and Furriest” by Jonathan Bryant

* Best public service for “Amendment One” by Andy Brown

  • Best glossy special section for “Profile Magazine” by staff
  • Creative use of multimedia for “General multimedia” by staff
  • Best magazine periodical for “Camellia Magazine” by staff
  • Best original/creative idea for “Classifieds are a rip off” by Andy Brown
  • Best classified display ad for “Manpower” by Niki Bennett
  • Best signature page for “Independence Day” by Courtney Neese
  • Best glossy regularly scheduled special section for “Healthcare Magazine” by staff

  • Best in-paper promotion of newspaper for “Put us in, Coach” by Tracy Salter
