One year later: Cosbys offer reward for murder

On June 13, 2016, Edwin Earl Cosby was murdered inside of his automobile dealership office in Rutledge; a year later the case remains unsolved.His son, Brent Cosby, and his wife discovered Cosby with a gunshot wound to the head.
Early on the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office ruled the case as a homicide.
“My dad was 78 years old, and didn’t have an enemy in the world,” Brent Cosby said. “I think it was someone who knew or knew of him that shot him. I’m not sure why they would’ve done that. He would’ve given them anything they asked for.”
On the year anniversary of Cosby’s death, the family now will offer a reward. The reward is $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest, and $7,500 for information that leads to aconviction.
“That could be two different people,” Cosby said. “We’re not sure at the moment how many people are involved in this, but we know definitely there is one. The ultimate goal is to find the person who did this and bring him to justice.”
Cosby says that he believes one holdup with the case is the holding of evidence at the forensic lab.
“The forensic labs in Alabama are under funded,” he said. “I think the sheriff’s office only has a small percent of evidence that they need in order to work this case and solve it.
Our lab is so far behind because of under-funding and budgets. That’s what it really comes down to.
Yet, Crenshaw County sheriff Mickey Powell is still optimistic about the future of the case. “It is still a real active case,” Powell said. “We are still working on leads. We’re still right in the middle of investigation, and we have several things going on it.”
Cosby says despite everything he remembers his father as a great man who cared about Crenshaw County.“He never met a stranger, and he absolutely loved this community,” he said.
“I used to make a joke to him all that time that he needed a passport to leave Rutledge. He felt at home here, and he taught us from day one that God’s grace is sufficient and enough. That’s how we’re able to cope with it today”
