In one month’s time, aspiring basketball stars around the county will be lacing up for Georgiana’s 10th annual basketball camp on Wednesday, May 31.

The camp will be held from 8 a.m. until noon from Wednesday until Friday, June 2.

Held for boys and girls ages 8-14, the camp will feature fundamental basketball skills taught by Georgiana’s own basketball staff, as well as a few returning familiar faces—Georgiana alumni Richard Boggan and Jacquez Payton are two of the confirmed assistant coaches who will help with this year’s camp, in addition to assistant coaches Ken Hamilton and Matt Campbell.

Georgiana head basketball coach Kirk Norris has served at the helm of the program for a decade now, and he said that this year’s goal remains unchanged—teach area youth the skills to be successful on the hardwood, and make sure they have fun while doing it.

The Panthers’ success during the regular season has drawn even more interest to the camp in recent years, bolstering an already healthy turnout to numbers north of 55-60 campers.

That’s good news for the program, as the camp serves as one of the Panthers’ biggest annual fundraisers.

“We have some stuff going on in the summer with our guys and girls playing in team camps, and this helps with some of those costs, too,” Norris said.

Georgiana’s annual camp will feature the return of daily skill challenges involving dribbling, passing, shooting and defense.

Once the drills are complete, campers will face off in daily competitions, such as gotcha, hot shot, free throw contests and a full-court five-on-five showdown at the conclusion of each day.

The cost to attend is $25 per camper, and each camper will receive a Georgiana Basketball Camp T-shirt. 

There will also be a camp store with snacks and drinks to buy each day, and camp champions will be awarded prizes on the final day.

The deadline to register is May 19, and late registration will be held on the first day of the camp prior to its start that morning.
