With Relay for Life slated for April 29th in Luverne, the Crenshaw County Chamber Belles and Beaus launched a Jail or Bail fundraiser to show their support.

The Belles and Beaus do two fundraisers a year; this is the group’s first time hosting the Jail or Bail.

“It a great fundraiser for us to have to get ready for the big kick off,” said Belles and Beaus advisor Ruth Bayman.

As a part of the fundraiser, the group chooses community leaders to make a contribution to the fundraiser. If they contribute, then they money bails them out, but if they do not they will be taken to jail.

“We did a subpoena, and it told them they had to report to our station between the hours of 10 and 2, and their bond was set at $100,” Bayman said. “We have Trooper Adam Robinson, Sheriff Powell and Deputy Que Benton to take the belles and beaus around with a list of the people who have been subpoenaed but haven’t showed up.”

The group has a goal of $4,000, but overall would like to generate awareness for the cause.

“It was a great day, and we raised a good amount of money,” said Emily Sims, Belle from Brantley High School. “It was the first time a lot of us got to do this, and it was a lot of fun. We’re here to help, and to get as many people to help out as we can.”

There are 35 Belles and Beaus from every school throughout Crenshaw County.  The Chamber is now accepting applications for next year’s Belle’s and Beaus. Applicants must be in the 10th, 11th or 12 grade. Applications can be picked up at Economic Development office, or from Bayman at the Board of Education.
