Cougars fall in Emmanuel spring tourney

On the first weekend of their Spring Break, the Crenshaw Christian Academy varsity baseball team travelled to Dothan for Emmanuel Christian’s annual tournament. The Cougars lost all three of their games, but gained ground by testing multiple defensive lineups, specifically on the mound.

In their first game, the Cougars faced the hosting Emmanuel Warriors. In the 5-4 loss, Senior Cole Roper started on the mound, giving up five runs to a stout Emmanuel offense. Fellow Senior Cade Calhoun, who held the Warriors from scoring in the final three innings, relieved Roper. Calhoun’s late surge and a triple play made by the defense kept the game close, but could not power the Cougars ahead.
In game two, Crenshaw played the mismatched Class AAA Lakeside Chiefs. Juniors Clay Hammonds and Sam Barksdale shared pitching duties.
CCA’s normally booming bats fell flat and met with an error-laden defensive performance for an 11-2 loss.
In their third and final game of the weekend, Crenshaw was defeated by Ezekiel Academy by a score of 7-2. Junior Clayton Hester handled pitching duties for the duration of the game. Junior Centerfielder Ben Archie boasted a stellar defensive performance with three diving catches, but the lackluster Cougar offense proved to be a critical factor once again.
Crenshaw’s baseball and softball teams will travel to Abbeville Christian Academy for doubleheaders Tuesday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
