It was a busy week for the Tigers at Luverne High School. This past weekend the baseball team competed in the Tiger Squadron Classic tournament, a partnered tournament with Highland Home School.

“In the first game we had some errors,” senior Blake Meadows said. “We came together, and took care of some business.”

Senior Antavious Brown hit two home runs to triumph over Red Level.

“It was my first two home runs ever,” said Brown. “I’m glad my teammates were there to support me.”

After defeating Red Level, the Tigers played Ariton. Holding their own, Luverne defeated the Ariton Tigers 9-4.

Advancing through the tournament, the Luverne Tigers played Samson High School. Sophomore Tobey Powell took the mound numerous times. After being down in the beginning of the game the Luverne Tigers turned around, and strived for victory.

“We started out with a lot of errors,” Powell said. “We ended up playing good after we got on our feet.” The Tigers prevailed winning 13-12.

In the last game of the tournament, Luverne played the Ariton Tigers once again. With the newfound confidence, the Luverne Tigers pulled off a win against Ariton for the second time. The final score of the game was 12-4, deeming the Luverne Tigers tournament champions.The Luverne Lady Tiger Softball team had a tough week with the loss to Zion Chapel last Thursday.

“They are probably one of the toughest teams we will face, but we held our own,” junior Zanna Bloodsworth said.

“I thought Libbey pitched very well. She struck out seven, and didn’t walk anyone,” Head Coach Jason Easterling said. “We hit the ball very well, but we made a lot of errors that cost us the win.”

The team played diligently throughout the game, but they lost 8-5.

”Overall it was a great learning process,” junior Mackenzie Carlos said. “It showed us how to come together, and fight for what we want as a team.” The Lady Tigers practiced rigorously this past weekend. “We’re really trying to focus on fundamentals, and reinforce the basics,” Easterling said

The Lady TIgers will take on Zion Chapel for the second time Thursday, March 16.

“I feel like we’re more prepared because we know what to expect,” freshman Libbey Jones said.

The Luverne Baseball team will also take on Calhoun the same day at home starting at 4 p.m.
