The newly formed Luverne cub scouts competed in the Ecunchatee District Pinewood Derby, with scouts receiving big honors.

Luverne Pack 42 was formed in February. Before it, there had not been a Cub Scout division in Crenshaw County for two years.

10 scouts from the pack participated in the derby car race. Scouts put together their derby cars with help of their parents.

“It took a couple of weeks for them to complete the cars,” Pack 42 Scoutmaster Erica Conner said. “We had a derby garage, and Mr. Zach helped the boys cut them down.”

From the Tiger division, Jackson Conner won first place, and Chevy Hall placed third. In the Wolves division, Garrett Womack placed second, and Steven Malone placed third. Jackson Conner won third place overall.

“I was trying to find something for my boys to do that wasn’t just sports,” Conner said. “I figured this would be a good way to get themw outdoors, and involved in the community.”

Crenshaw already has a Boy Scout division, which is for grades sixth and up. Cub Scouts range from grades first to fifth. The boys are placed into groups according to grades. The Tigers are 1st graders, Wolves are second graders, Third grade are bears, and fourth graders are Webelows.

“We have about 30 children,” Conner said. “Scouts is year round, so there is always something to do.”

Cub Scouts earn adventure loops to progress into their new dens each year.

“If they follow along like they need to, they should be able to move up every year,” Conner said.

Registration for every year is a one-time fee of $25. The pack meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Luverne United Methodist Church.

“We have boys participating from Luverne and Brantley,” Conner said. “We would love to have anyone who wants to participate county-wide. I would like for the boys to learn how to be better citizens, cultivate a love for outdoors, and form a bond and brotherhood with their fellow Scouts. ”
