Dr. Seuss once said, “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”

Every March readers around the world united to pay tribute to the author who’s rhymes first touched their hearts. March 2nd is National Read Across America day. It is a day to pay tribute to famous author, Dr. Seuss, whose birthday correlates with the day.

This year, students all over Crenshaw County celebrated with themes to fit the whole week. At Highland Home School, students participated in Dr. Seuss Trivia, scavenger hunts, and on even tapped Thing 1 (HHS Principal Cliff Maddox) to the school’s wall. Dr. Boyd English also made an appearance at HHS to read to students during the special day

At Luverne, students also celebrated all week.

“The teachers had different activities organized in their classroom from K4 all the way up to 6th grade.” Luverne Principal Jamie Howard said. “Our big event was on Friday.”

On Friday, the Cat in the Hat presented students with green eggs and ham.

“I dressed as the Cat in the Hat, and read a book to all of elementary students located in our auditorium,” Howard said. “

Each class performed song based on the Dr. Seuss book of their choice. Students were also given prizes for their accelerated reader accomplishments.

Schools also hosted dress-up days where the students dressed according to different themes of Seuss’s books.

From school to school guests were brought in from the community to read Seuss’s books to the elementary students.

‘We had teachers, businessman and women to read and come and speak to the students about the importance of reading,” Howard said. “It went extremely well, all of the kids really enjoyed dressing up.

Overall, it was just a wonderful experience.”
