The Luverne Tigers closed their regular season play with victories across the board against the Highland Home Squadron.

The Lady Tigers set the trend with a whopping 59-27 win. The girls have had steady progress through their last few weeks of play.

“I would say the last four games, we have started to be a real team,” LHS Head Coach Rasheeda May said.

Cassidy Johnson was the lead scorer against Highland Home, securing 15 points for the Tigers.

With a few injuries taking out key players, May says she saw the team persevere overall for a good season.

“We’re still building, and we are young,” she said.

“Next year will be a better year. We made a lot of mistakes, and we took a few loses. Overall it was a learning season for us.”

The girls competed against Central High for their first round of area competition last night.

“We’ve lost twice against them during regular season play,” May said.

“We look to beat them on the defensive end. If we can get the lead offensively, then I think we will be all right”

The varsity Tigers won in a hard fought battle against the Squadron, skating with a 61-60 victory.

“We didn’t shoot free throws that well,” Head Coach Richard Dorsey said.

“When we shoot free throws well the game isn’t even close, but we got the win”

The Tigers completed their appearance to area competition on Tuesday night with a loss against the Goshen Eagles, 60-29.

“The season wasn’t what it could’ve been, but you never can foresee injuries and things like that,” Dorsey said.

“You have to be prepared and hope everyone responds like they should. We’re still learning, and hopefully next year things will improve.”

Luverne hosted its senior night on Friday. The basketball program has five athletes graduating in May: Alexis Means, Jasha Mitchell, La’Darion Harrell, Rondarious Steele, and Eric Upshaw.

Luverne will usher in baseball and softball season at the end of February.
