With area play around the corner, the Lady Tigers picked up their momentum in their last few games of regular season play.

Last week the girls team fell short to Greenville High School 66-48, but turned it around against the Brantley Lady Bulldogs on Monday night.

Through a slow pace game initially the Lady Tigers burst on the scene in the final quarter of play. With less than three minutes left on the play clock, the girls fought back closing a 10-point gap to a three point difference. Despite much effort, the girls lost 32-29.

“Our playing against Brantley was very well much improved,” Head Coach Rasheeda May said.

“I counted on some people on the bench, and they gave me great minutes.”

May says defense played a major roll in the girls being able to get back into the game.

“I had a team effort from everybody, not just the starting five,” she said.

“I know you have to play the game one quarter at a time, but we played great defensively the whole night.”

On Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers finally finished on top again. They beat the Lady Tigers of Elba 56-29.

“Offensive end, defensive end and a change of attitude made the difference,” May said.

“We finally just made it our mentality to go out there and play basketball, and that’s what we did.”

Due to a few injures, the Lady Tigers’ starting line up has a few changes since the season began in May. Sophomore Cassidy Johnson has proven to be great scorer for the team. Against Elba, Johnson scored 34 points, followed by 10 points from freshman Vaniyah Williams.

With only one game left to play in regular, which is against in county rivals Highland Home, May looks to her offensive efforts to lead the way.

“We have to work on our offensive end a little more,” she said.

“I really want to see us outscore our opponents. We are going to work towards beating the man to man defense.”

The Luverne Tigers will host Highland Home on Friday night at 4:30 p.m.
