Monday night, the Brantley High School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs took on their county rival, the Luverne High School Tigers.

Both games resulted in a victory for Brantley as the Lady Bulldogs walked away at 32-29 and the Bulldogs at 43-31.

“For most of the (Luverne) game it was back and forth. It was kind of a knock down, drag out game,” said boys varsity basketball coach Andre Parks.

“It was a really tough game and a really physical game. I thought we played through some adversity. We had a couple of guys get hurt. I was really pleased with the fact that when we didn’t think things went our way, we continued to play through it.”

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Adrian Person, Jr., with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Following behind was Parker Driggers with 11 points and seven steals, followed by Mick Beverly with 11 points.

“They had a 14 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Luverne played pretty good, and it was a good rival game,” said girls varsity basketball coach Roland Jones.

“We were just proud to get the win. We’ve beaten them twice this year, and we lost to them twice last year.”

Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was Olivia Jones with 15 points, followed by Kassidy Wilcox with seven points.

In the next matchup against Kinston, the BHS Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs once again came home victorious. The Bulldogs brought home a victory of 54-41 and the Lady Bulldogs a victory of 55-22.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Driggers with 15 points.

“We went into that game with seven varsity players and had to move up a B team guy, so we were really short already,” Parks said.

“We found different ways to score and different ways to make baskets.”

Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was Olivia Jones with 12 points, followed by Emory Bush and Gabby Perkins with 10 points each.

“A lot of people got to play. We started out slow, but we picked it up toward the second half. We got to play a lot of the younger girls, and that’s always a plus for us in the future,” coach Jones said.

The Lady Bulldogs now have a regular season record of 20-5.

The next game for the Bulldogs will take place tonight at home against Straughn. This will also serve as senior night for the Bulldogs.

For area game play, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Georgiana on Tuesday night and will compete against county rivals the Highland Home School Lady Squadron at 3 p.m.

The boys will play that same day in Georgiana at 4:30 p.m. against Red Level.

“Right now, my philosophy is that it’s not about any magic pills or anything to win a game. There’s no play, defense or offense that we haven’t done already that’s going to win for us,” Parks said.

“We’re just working on becoming more skilled, working on getting back to the basics and making sure we’re in the right places for what we already do.”
